I Can Only Imagine
THE SONG YOU KNOW. THE STORY YOU DON'T.
I Can Only Imagine is the most played contemporary Christian song of all time. Even those who are not fans of CCM know the song.
I have never listened to much CCM, but hear songs here and there. I have heard different artists sing I Can Only Imagine, and have always liked the song.
This song has a story behind it. And on the spur of the moment, my dad and I decided to watch that story on the big screen.
I Can Only Imagine is the story of Bart Millard, lead singer of MercyMe. The song that has impacted millions around the world... took an entire life's journey to bring into existence.
From an abusive father to a beautiful girl, from a school musical to a Christian rock band, this story is amazing. It brought tears to my eyes, then pouring down my cheeks.
There is no language, no immodesty. Some women have slightly low-cut shirts, but they are never low enough to show anything. A little girl gives a little boy a quick kiss on his cheek.
There is some brief and light violence, like when a character shatters a plate against another character's head. There is implied violence.
There is a ton of emotional tension, as Bart's father is very abusive and violent. An intense argument is heard.
So there is no content that I believe to be inappropriate.
The only thing that some would have a problem with is the music. A character listens to older rock music on cassette tapes a couple times, and during part of the movie you see parts of concerts by a Christian rock band, which is trying to find it's purpose in life.
This movie needs to be seen. As I'm writing this, the movie has already made $17,000,000 and is in the #3 spot. Let's hope that it goes so big that Hollywood just can't ignore that it is there.
Intense thematic material makes the film too much for most young children. The film is rated PG for it.
This movie will touch you and very likely make you cry. It is the story of a man who watches the power of Christ change his dad and lead him to write what may be one of the greatest Christian songs of all time.
I have watched many Christian films. This is the first one that ever made me cry.
You must watch it, even if you don't especially like contemporary music. The story of what God did in his life is almost unbelievable! Go see it in the theatre while it's still there!
